Well, a friend and his wife just bought a Gamo for their son for his birthday and an RWS Magnum for himself and he was showing them to my wife and me last time we visited. We ended up shooting his son's .177 at targets in their basement for hours and we all had a blast. My wife used to shoot with her brother when they were young so she encouraged me to by a gun for myself to shoot with our friends and in our large yard.
I set about researching my purchase and stumbled across the Hatsan 95. I read and read and watched YouTube videos about it and was convinced that, for just $149, this was the rifle for me. I placed my order and waited about 10 days for the rifle to arrive.
When it finally arrived, the first one had been factory-boxed with some dings in the stock and scratches in the barrel. Other than that, the gun WAS BEAUTIFUL and felt like a million bucks to hold and to shoot. I decided I should exchange it and, as long as the replacement didn't have any defects, I'd surely keep it...which I have now done.
Two points I'd like to make; 1. The gun is remarkably beautiful and shoots really well and 2. There are some "issues" from the factory in addition to those noted above. I will elaborate.
Both of the Hatsan guns I have received and shot have VERY TIGHT bores and will not easily accept many standard or premium pellets. I admit I don't have a lot of experience with other guns but the 4 others (owned by friends) that I have shot would easily accept any pellet I tried in them. At a recent get-together we had 5 high quality air rifles, including my Hatsan 95, and a variety of premium pellets, and none of them had bores nearly as tight as the Hatsan. It takes mighty tough fingers to get a pellet in this gun. My suggestion is never buy any .177 caliber pellet with a size exceeding 45mm. Smaller is even better. Larger is unusable as are certain 45mm pellets.
Next issue is actually kind of funny. I had been shooting RWS 8.4 gram round head pellets in my first gun that were tight but worked well. This gun is very powerful so it is loud but those pellets never went "supersonic" in the first gun. But guess what? These same pellets are supersonic in the replacement gun I've decided to keep so shooting in my yard with these pellets is too loud for the neighbors. It sounds almost like a regular .22 rimfire rifle! I plan to buy heavier pellets to slow them down a bit to solve what, for me, is a problem. Others may find this extra power highly desirable but I don't hunt and don't really need it. Hopefully the heavier pellets will resolve the noise issue.
Finally, notice the 5 star rating. I love this gun, despite the few challenges I have had between the first and the second one I have owned. It is really great overall and won't disappoint. It holds its own against my friend's RWS Magnum in looks, feel, and power. Build quality is pretty darned close, too. I love the trigger and, though I am still using the impressive open sights, I don't think the scope looks cheap at all. Others with more experience than me don't agree with that comment and see the scope as a "throw away", but that's just my impression from handling it.
For my purposes, this gun is all I need for now as a relative "newbie" to airgun shooting. If I get into the target shooting hobby more, I might buy more guns but this one easily meets all of my present needs and expectations. Bear in mind that it is heavy, takes some strength to cock, and has a bit of a kick (not painful to me) and I think you'll be as happy as I and so many others are with the Hatsan 95. Maybe try a .22 caliber to see if the tight-bore issue isn't an issue there. Just remember .22 pellets are roughly twice the price of .177. In conclusion, I love this gun and highly recommend it.
First, the gun is made in Turkey, NOT CHINA, and the steel is German Steel. The stock alone would make this gun worth at least $300.00. It's solid Turkish Walnut with checkering on the forearm, and the pistol grip, and the checkering is as fine as you would see on expensive guns. It has a Gold trigger with 3 separate adjustments. Now about the trigger....I noticed there was about 1/16" play on both sides of the trigger. I thought I got a bad gun, as I have never seen a trigger that moved side to side like that. I called Hatsan and talked to tech services and emailed them twice. I also called Pyramid Air and talked to Tech Services. This is the conclusion. It is normal (and I quote) for there to be about an eighth of an inch of play from side to side . That's 1/16" on each side. Hatsan told me the triggers all their guns are like that. I've never seen that before, but after shooting it today, it wasn't an issue. I could only find one blog talking about the play in the trigger. Oh Well...I think I can live with it. I had to remind myself that this is not an $800.00 gun.
The barrel fits very tight up against the cylinder. (Nice quality fit) The scope is an "Optima", which Hatsan told me is made in China. It is a 3-9X32 with a duplex reticle, but it has no AO. But it gets the job done. You may want to upgrade to another scope. It's OK, but it's not a Leupold or Nikon. The optics are nice and clear. The gun comes with a scope stop mounted on it, but I had to turn it around in order to close the distance on the eye relief. It has fiber optic sights, and see through scope mounts. I tried the fiber optic sights today and they work great. Very easy to see. Nice recoil pad. I had a Gamo Showstopper, 1400 fps and I took it back for a refund. I don't have a very high opinion of Gamo air guns.
Even though there are a few things that aren't quite up to high standards, it's more a matter of some tweaking and minor adjustments. You should also remember that an air gun that costs $150.00 is not going to have a $200.00 scope on it, but if your on a budget like I am, I don't think you'll find a nicer air gun in this price range, or even some higher priced air guns that I looked at.
All in All....For the price it costs, you can't beat the quality of this gun. It took me 22 shots to zero the scope in, but when I did I was hitting bulls eyes at 20 yards, and putting some pellets through holes I had already made. I forgot to mention, It also has a rifled barrel.
BUY THIS GUN.......YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY.
NOTE: It is a little heavy. 8.5lb.
AMMO: Beeman Kodiak Match .177 Pellets @ 10.65gr.
UPDATE: I have taken this gun shooting twice since this review, so here's what I have to say.
I tweaked the scope and it's holding dead on, point-of-aim just fine. The trigger has a little too much pull force to suit me, but I'll try to adjust it next time. I was hitting empty 20ga. shotgun shells at 20 yards with every shot.
I REALLY can't say anything bad about this gun. Every time I go to the gun range, and come home, I am extremely satisfied with the choice I made.
Also, I researched the factory where this gun was manufactured, and I can say that it is a STATE OF THE ART factory with CNC lathes, computerized machines and all the modern equipment of the best high tech factories you could ever find anywhere. It's in Izmir, Turkey, on the coast of the Aegean Sea. Beautiful city.
This is a very good quality gun. I don't think you'd be sorry if you purchased it.
It won the 2014 BEST SELLER AWARD at Pyramid Air.
